Constitutional Background

The Republic of Moldova roughly covers the territory of Bessarabia, formerly ruled by Romania and later part of the Soviet Union.  Russians on the small part east of the 'Dnister' River proclaimed an unacknowledged 'Transnistria Republic'.

  • 28 July 1994: New Constitution adopting, replacing the Soviet Constitution.
  • 27 Aug 1991: Independence from Soviet Union.
