Constitutional Background
The world's oldest parliament was established in Iceland (The Althing, in 930).  The country was ruled by Norway and Denmark, attaining independence in 1944.

- 17 June 1944: Independence from Denmark.
- 16 June 1944: Constitution adopted; in force since 17 June.
- 1874: Limited home rule granted to Iceland.
- 930: Establishment of the world's first parliament, the Althing.
