Sierra Leone

Constitutional Background

The Republic of Sierra Leone has adopted its Constitution on 1 Oct 1991 and amended it several times. There is no ICL-edition yet.

The main opposition to the government is that of Foday Sankoh's rebel army, the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), which is supposed to transform into a political party once the UN has set up a trust fund to finance the transition. Sankoh operates from Abidjan, the capital of C&ocicrumflex;te d'Ivore. Also involved in the fights ongoing violations of the truce is a group of traditional hunters, the Kamajor militia, in the south and east of the country and formerly associated with government troups.
