Constitutional Background

The new constitution was adopted in 1995.  The constitution states in Article 114 that the Articles 1, 2 and 114 cannot be changed (entrenchment).  These provisions declare the Republic or Armenia independent, democratic, social, and legal.

  • 5 July 1995: New Constitution adopted.
  • 23 Sep 1991: Independence from Soviet Union.
  • 28 May 1918: Foundation of the First Armenian Republic.
