Constitutional Background

The revised constitution, drafted under Sandinista rule, was at issue in the constitutional conflict of February 1995. The conflict was solved by the political pact from 15 June 1995.

History and News

  • 10 Jan 1997: Arnoldo Aleman is inaugurated as new President.
  • Oct 1996: Parliamentary and presidential elections.
  • 30 June 1995: Parliament nominates new Election Council to fulfill political pact from 15 June, starting preparation for general elections.
  • 25 June 1995: After Farmers seized the Parliament to claim legalization of expropriations during Sandinista rule, parliamentary deliberations about the constitutional interpretation law take place in the Katholic University.
  • 15 June 1995: President Violeta Chamorro and President of the National Assembly Luis Humberto Guzman sign a 'Political Pact' stipulating that the constitution will be enacted together with a law about its interpretation and reforms.
  • Feb 1995: After President Violeta Chamorro refused signing the revised constitution, the FSLN (Sandinistas) demanded new elections.
